GB Age-Groupers Win Six European Medals in Vichy

British Age-Groupers win six European Long Distance medals in Vichy.

Great Britain’s Age-Group team success continued with another six medals won at the ETU Long Distance Championships in Vichy on Sunday 1 September.

Fran Bungay and Liz Hall were crowned European Champions in their respective age groups.

The team of 32 British athletes joined 1400 others in the French spa town of Vichy to tackle the 3.8km swim, 180km bike ride and marathon run with a view to adding to the 197 medals won in international Age-Group competition around the world this year.

The swim took place in the rowing lake, Lac d’Allier, followed by a 180km bike ride into some strong head winds, particularly in the final 30km. The marathon run passed through the famous parks of Vichy and banks of the Allier River.

Fran Bungay was the third fastest Age-Group woman, and the fastest British woman with her time of 10:51:34. The 39 year old won gold in her Age-Group and was only beaten overall by two younger competitors.

France’s Adeline Beauchet was the fastest Age Group woman with a time of 10:25:11 but Britain’s Heather Jackson recorded 10:02:55 in the open race for the seventh fastest female time over all including the professional athletes.

Fastest over all Age-Grouper in the men’s race was Jerome Becht (FRA). He was agonisingly close to breaking nine hours with his finishing time of 9:00:09. Chris Stuart was the top British man and tenth Age-Grouper over all in 9:25:47.

Britain’s only male medal winner was the most senior member of the team, 60 year-old Dave Pratten who won silver in a time of 11:48:02

Roland Kemp, Great Britain team captain commented that there were other British medal winners who unfortunately weren’t registered so aren’t included in the British medal winning total.
He added: “It was an honour to Captain the GBR team. There was a super team spirit and it was certainly a few days of amazing memories.”
